At
their March 8th meeting, Norman City Council members presented
Environmental Excellence Awards to Bio-Cide International, C&C Trailers,
and Yamanouchi Consumer, Incorporated.
In accordance with the Clean Water Act, the City of Norman's Industrial
Pretreatment Program is required by the US Environmental Protection Agency to
identify and permit 'Significant Industrial Users' of the Norman's sanitary
sewer system. A Significant Industrial
User is a business or industry that contributes an abnormal amount of liquid,
chemicals or organic materials to the sewer system. Being a Significant Industrial User involves periodic monitoring
for pollutants and extensive reporting and record keeping.
Debra Smith, Environmental Manager
for the Utilities Department, said, "These three industries have gone
above and beyond their requirements as dischargers to our wastewater
system." In addition, these
industries have maintained compliance with all monitoring and reporting
requirements for 2004. Ken Komiske,
Utilities Director, notes, "All of Norman appreciates their efforts and
concerns about our environment. They
are an example of good citizenship and a model for other business and
industries. The three industries were
presented with a plaque to put in their place of business, so others can be
aware of their efforts to make Norman a better place to live."
