WDT Licenses New Weather Prediction Technology from McGill University

Weather Decision Technologies, Inc. (WDT) recently announced the signing of an exclusive license agreement for the latest advanced forecasting technology from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Named MAPLE, the technology provides four-to-six-hour highly specific nationwide forecasts of precipitation and its intensity. WDT plans to commercialize the application and offer it as part of their suite of services under the name Storm Predictor™.

"We are excited about incorporating this exclusively licensed technology into WDT's existing services," said J.T. Johnson, chief technology officer. "Storm Predictor™ takes forecasting beyond simple projection giving our clients additional time and insight as to how the weather will affect their business."

Currently radar data only paints a picture of what is happening at the moment. Storm Predictor™ is an advanced statistical technique that outperforms numerical models in the short-term forecasting time frame (0-6 hours). Numerical models traditionally take more time to produce good forecasts. Storm Predictor™ fills the time gap between observations (what is happening right now) and longer range forecasts.

Storm Predictor™ will be included in the package of services WDT offers its customers. In the United States, WDT will offer the forecasting application to a variety of industries as a service that is hosted and managed by WDT. Internationally, WDT will offer Storm Predictor™ as a component in a suite of nowcasting technologies that is installed and produced on local systems.
